What are twins? Simply, two babies born at the same time.
There are two main types of twins: identical and fraternal.
Does it matter which you have? Of course it does! Knowing will give you information like
- what is your likelihood of getting pregnant with twins again,
- if one baby has a health issue, will it affect the other,
- how do you parent identical twins to help them develop their own identities, etc…
This section will give you greater understanding of each type of twin and the lingo that doctors, nurses, and the parents-of-twins world uses to talk about your twins.
Did you know – that even though twins can have their own sacs and placenta – they can still be identical?! This is something that 90% of the medical field we encountered did NOT know. Even Google is confused about this. Right now, google ‘how do you know if you are having identical or fraternal twins’ and see that the main answer says “if you’re having twins that are fraternal, (the ultrasound tech will be able to tell since) they will have their own placentas.” This is not true! Gaining your own knowledge during your pregnancy is important since even doctors aren’t well versed in all the facts about twins.
